Reviving Former Glory: A Northwest Modern Master Bath

Forty years ago this bathroom was probably one of the most chic spaces on the block. It had huge custom skylights over a fully tiled soaking tub, a separate shower and enclosed toilet room, and two sinks! But after four decades we all start to show a little wear and tear, and this bathroom was ready to be redone to bring her back into the limelight.

The clients wanted to create a light, bright, open and airy space with a zen, organic feel that they could fill with plants and use to show off some of their natural stone specimen collection. They also wanted a larger shower with a bench, which was a challenge because the skylights were divided into two sections, separated by a wall, leaving a rather small space for the shower.

We solved it by asking the contractors to open up the wall as much as possible, and enclosing the shower with a custom glass enclosure instead of a wall. This unified the skylights without adding the additional cost of changing the skylights, and made the whole room feel incredibly spacious and open.

To create a light and airy feeling we chose clean-lined fixtures in a satin nickel finish, and then anchored the brightness of the fixtures and the white shower tile with warm, rich bronze penny tile, floor tile, and cabinets.

To increase the size of the shower we decreased the size of the soaking tub area, but made it feel like a special feature by selecting a beautiful free-standing soaking tub. (The continuous band of penny tile from the shower to the tub area also served to make the spaces feel more grand, connected, and calm.)

By keeping the design finishes simple we created a background palette that is a perfect backdrop to some of the treasures the homeowners have collected, especially some of their magnificent stone specimens!

But that didn’t keep us from adding some special details, like the ginko leaf drawer hardware – maybe one of our favorite hardware details *ever*! It was a treat getting to design this space (along with the guest bath and in-home spa for this client) and breathe new life into an already architecturally-lovely home!
